2023 State Champions

Oro Valley Canyon del Oro was a .500 baseball team when Lucas Casey wasn’t on the mound this season.

But when he took the ball, it was lights out for the opponent.

One last time, he brought his best stuff in the biggest game Monday night, and the No. 5 Dorados rode his right arm to a 4-1 victory over No. 2-seed Scottsdale Saguaro for the 4A state championship at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Casey got into the seventh inning, before he reached his pitch limit at 105 and had to come out.

But Chris Humphreys came on to pitch and watched his right fielder flag down Cam Caminiti’s deep drive to the warning track, before striking out Cade Shumard to set off a championship celebration for the second year in a row. Last year, CDO beat rival Tucson Salpointe Catholic, 7-6, for the title.
